Born partly out of my love to learn about food and partly out of my own complicated history and relationship with eating, Balanced Diet is first and foremost a place of safe learning and discovery: a place where we can balance the pleasures of eating with an exploration of the political, social, economic, environmental, cultural, and ethical (whether real or perceived) forces and implications of our food choices. It will not be a newsletter that has anything to do with “dieting” or the culture that surrounds it. I am not about to tell you all what you should or shouldn’t eat.
Instead I hope to enrich your eating habits by either inspiring you to cook or bake or sparking a thought about food (or the system behind it) that you hadn’t considered before. Together, I hope we can redefine what a “balanced diet” means in the broader and incredibly complex conversation about food.
To that end, I intend to build this newsletter in three parts:
My own original recipes developed exclusively for subscribers of Balanced Diet.
A selection of recipes curated around a particular theme or ingredient.
Essays, interviews, and other pieces that highlight issues related to food, eating, and our food systems.
As this newsletter ages (hopefully like a good hard cheese) and evolves, I promise to monitor its progress and check in with you on how you’re feeling about it. It’s my every intent to keep this space as community-minded as possible, building rich connections around food.
With that, I want to express my sincerest thanks to you for allowing me into your inboxes. I am always happy to hear back from you if you’re ever so moved (positively or negatively) by my writing.
Thank you again,
Charlotte
